Now Martin is set to close its doors. “Martin gives non-traditional learners a shot at higher education. Its model is unique, providing new opportunities for those who are otherwise discounted, discouraged, and disregarded. And it succeeded, producing over 1,500 alumni who went on to serve our community — including my grandmother, Congresswoman Julia Carson. “Martin exemplifies what is best about our country — giving everyone a fair shot at an education, a good job, and a good life. It is tailored to low-income, minority, and adult learners, who often have unique needs. I've always supported Martin’s mission in Congress, including with a bill to permanently fund minority-serving institutions. “The state cut funding because of inaccurate and misleading national talking points against diversity, equity, and inclusion. It was not a decision made thoughtfully or based on facts and what’s best for our community. As a result, learners in Indianapolis will have fewer opportunities. “I want to thank Martin University leadership, faculty, staff, students, and alumni who champion all that is best about Indianapolis.
