This year's bill contains historic changes to promote resilience, innovation, and competition, and contains quality of life improvements for service members and their families. Among the many provisions in this legislation is a bipartisan amendment introduced by Rep. Carson, as well as his colleagues Reps. Eshoo and McKinley, aimed at fighting pancreatic cancer. The amendment increases pancreatic cancer research funding at the Department of Defense's Congressionally Directed Medical Research Programs (CDMRP) to $20 million; that includes at least $5 million in funding for an early detection initiative (EDI). This figure represents a $5 million-dollar increase compared to the provision in last year's NDAA, which Rep. Carson also authored. "I am incredibly pleased that the House has passed this year's NDAA, which is vital for the continued strength of our military and the well-being of our service members and military families. I am also honored that this year's legislation builds on my ongoing efforts to fight pancreatic cancer. This cancer is particularly deadly. We have lost so many Americans to this disease, including Rep. John Lewis, Rep. Alcee Hastings, Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, and many others. We can help save lives through early detection and by increasing research, which is exactly what my amendment does. Now that the House has done its work and passed the NDAA, I urge the Senate to quickly pass it as well, so it can go be signed into law by the president."
