While avoiding a government shutdown is critical, I cast my vote in the hope that Congress will act to pass a responsible and long overdue FY 2018 spending bill, and provide funding for key, time-sensitive programs that we have yet to address. Congress urgently needs to find a real solution on extending and funding the programs that Hoosier children and families rely on. The Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP) enables over 100,000 Hoosier kids to get healthcare, but Republicans allowed its funding to expire over two months ago. Additionally, Marion County’s 24 Community Health Centers, a key part of our healthcare safety net for low-income Hoosiers, have been left in the lurch. Essential funding for low-income college students, safety-net hospitals, the home visiting program for new mothers and families have also been left in the lurch. House Republican leadership likewise continues to ignore the bipartisan consensus on issues that we must urgently address: Congress must undo President Trump’s damage and stabilize the Affordable Care Act markets, address the fate of the 10,000 DREAMers living in Indiana, many of whom have only known America as their home, provide funding to address the opioid crisis, support flood victims by reauthorizing the National Flood Insurance Program, and address the critical needs of Puerto Rico and the US Virgin Islands—where too many Americans remain without electricity. As Republicans seek to drastically increase the deficit with an irresponsible tax cut for the wealthy while triggering cuts to other health programs, it is critical that we ensure adequate funding for essential domestic programs that enable Hoosier children and families to succeed. | 1 | 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z | 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z |
