The initiative provides seniors and low-income families living in food deserts neighborhoods that lack a variety of food shopping options with discounted rides to grocery stores, helping to remove barriers to healthy foods. Carson strongly encouraged Lyft to expand this program following its early success in Washington, DC and Atlanta, GA. I'm very pleased by the news that Lyft is strengthening its efforts to create stronger and healthier families by bringing the Grocery Access Program to Indianapolis and many other cities, and I'm honored to have played a role in this expansion, Congressman Carson said. Too many people in our community and across America struggle to access nutritious foods due to financial and geographic constraints, and we need to get serious about finding solutions. We must continue to utilize innovative ideas such as this program, as well as comprehensive policy solutions, to solve this public health challenge. Today marks a big step in that goal. Congressman Carson has a long track record of working to improve access to nutritious foods in Indianapolis, authoring the Food Deserts Act in the 114th and 115th Congresses. This legislation would create state revolving funds to finance the operations of small grocery stores in food deserts, expanding access to healthy food in underserved areas.
