| https://cheney.house.gov/media/newsletters/congressman-liz-cheneys-december-1st-newsletter | Congressman Liz Cheney's December 1st Newsletter | 2017-12-01 | 2017 | 2017-12 | Republican | House | WY | Liz Cheney | C001109 | cheney.house.gov | legacy | This Week's Round-up Natural Resources Committee This week the House Natural Resources Committee reviewed, voted on, and passed H.R. 1778, a bill I introduced earlier this year. H.R. 1778 ensures there will be no future moratorium on coal leasing on federal lands without approval from the House and Senate. Coal is a national treasure and for far too long President Obama's war on coal did real damage to the livelihoods of the people and communities in our state. I'm proud this legislation passed the Natural Resources Committee so we can begin to undo that damage brought upon by burdensome Obama-era energy policies. Watch my opening statement here: https://goo.gl/sEBPVN Wyoming County Commissioner Jim Willox, a member from Douglas testified before the Natural Resources Committee this Wednesday regarding the National Environmental Policy Act. He did an incredible job representing Wyoming and it's damaging effects on our state. Watch his testimony here: Armed Services Committee This week the committee held several important briefings regarding the readiness of our military and the growing threat we face from North Korea. We also met with King Abdullah of Jordan to discuss the ongoing fight against ISIS, the expanding role of Iran and Russia in the Middle East, and the important relationship between the U.S. and Jordan. On Wednesday, Speaker Paul Ryan signed the bipartisan FY18 NDAA that will now head to President Trump's desk for a signature. I'm honored that I was able to serve as a conferee and speak on the House Floor and at the Rules Committee in support of this crucial bill. This bill provides a much needed and deserved pay raise for the troops and begins to undo that damage caused by the Obama Administration's misguided policies and the Budget Control Act. Most importantly, the FY18 NDAA included crucial amendments that I added that will benefit and support F.E. Warren. Rules Committee This week I managed the rule for HR 3017 the Brownsfields Enhancement, Economic Redevelopment, and Reauthorization Act of 2017 and a structured rule for H.R. 3905, Minnesota's Economic Rights in the Superior National Forest Act on the House floor. H.R. 3017 would amend the Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation, and Liability Act (CERCLA) to reauthorize the EPA's Brownsfield programs that would allow abandoned sites that may be contaminated by prior use to be cleaned up. This bill would benefit communities across the nation by putting money back into local economies. Towns across Wyoming have benefited grants through the Brownfields program. I spoke several times on the House floor this week about tax reform and the skyrocketing premiums that hard-working families are facing and gave real-world examples of the extreme increases people in Wyoming are facing for health insurance. It's crucially important that the Senate return to addressing this important issue so we can provide real reform and relief to the people of Wyoming. Read my statement from one of my House floor speeches below. My Democrat colleague was asserting that the Democrats just want to work together to get things done. My response is below: "It's awfully hard to claim you are dedicated and committed to that concept and then you don't even have leaders who show up to the key meetings. I would also point out Mr. Speaker, my colleague has called our bills and our process here ridiculous and extreme. I can't help but note what is truly ridiculous and extreme, Mr. Speaker, are the massive increases in [insurance] premiums that my constituents all across Wyoming are now facing. My constituents are now facing a significant increase because of this health plan that was supposed to provide coverage for everybody, low-cost coverage for everybody, that was supposed to guarantee access, guarantee if you liked your doctor you could keep him or her, guarantee that you would be able to afford health care. My constituents are now facing premiums that will bankrupt them. They are now receiving bills that demonstrate that their premiums, next year for example, for a retired married couple of two, the lowest amount that they can pay under the Obamacare bronze plan is $2,700 a month. Now that is absolutely unsustainable and that is what is ridiculous and extreme." I also gave a statement on the House floor about Congress putting the people before government. For the first time in many years, I'm proud to say members of the House and Senate are putting the people first regarding health care, tax reform, and defense spending legislation. Read and watch my full statement on the House floor here: (Link) Constituent Visits I want to thank all the students from Kaycee High School for stopping by this week and walking around the Capitol with me. The students got a chance to watch me represent Wyoming on the House floor and tour a television studio with me. It's was great to meet all of you. Around Town Senators Enzi and Barrasso and I were honored to be a part of this year's Wyoming Stock Growers Association's Natural Resource Rendezvous that took place in Casper. It was an honor to speak with over 500 ranchers, elected Conservation District Board members, and resource practitioners about the issues that are affecting the farming communities in our state. Thank you for having us. District staff made it out to the Carbon County Commissioners meeting this week with Chairman Johnson, Glode, Espy, and jones. The meeting tackled numerous issues such as the Secretary of State Clerk Association task force to replace voting machines and the Gateway West Transmission Line project. Congratulations to everyone who took the oath in Gillette to become a naturalized United States Citizen. Local Literary Congratulations to UW Cowboys for making it to the Famous Idaho Potato Bowl in Boise, Idaho. "Wyoming football's 13th and final game of the 2017 season will be played at the same location as its seventh game, according to a report from Brett McMurphy. McMurphy wrote in an article on The Score that the Cowboys will play in the Famous Idaho Potato Bowl in Boise, Idaho."
