The CO ALERTS Act, formerly known as the Safe Housing for Families Act, protects residents of public and subsidized housing from carbon monoxide poisoning by providing funds for the installation of carbon monoxide detectors in each unit of affordable housing. The funding package is expected to pass the Senate and be signed into law soon. An investigation by NBC News last year found that at least 13 residents of public housing have died of carbon monoxide poisoning since 2003, and the CO Alerts Act authorizes $304 million over the next three years to install carbon monoxide detectors in subsidized housing. Covered housing units include public housing as well as units covered by subsidized housing programs including tenant-based assistance, project-based assistance, supportive housing for the elderly, supportive housing for persons with disabilities, housing opportunities for persons with AIDS and rural housing. Carbon monoxide poisoning is preventable, and the solution is inexpensive when it comes to saving lives. No family should worry about dying in their sleep, and the CO Alerts Act ensures families in affordable housing are safe from this silent killer, said Congressman Jess Chuy Garca.
