Cicilline (RI-01) issued the following statement this morning after voting to approve two articles of impeachment in the House Judiciary Committee: President Donald J. Trump tried to cheat to win the 2020 election. The overwhelming evidence established that he used the awesome power of his office to coerce a foreign government to corrupt our elections by smearing his most feared political rival. In so doing, he put his own political interests above our nation's interests and betrayed the national security of the United States. His conduct remains a clear and present danger to our democracy. He got caught. He confessed. And then he engaged in an unprecedented pattern of obstruction, categorically refusing to cooperate with duly authorized Congressional investigations of his serious misconduct. In the United States, anyone can become president, but no one is above the law. Not even the president. Today, the Judiciary Committee moved forward with articles of impeachment to hold this President accountable. This is a sad day for our country. But it is a necessary one. Donald Trump left us with no choice but to proceed as we have. This is the only remedy available to us under the Constitution. I voted to approve both articles of impeachment and to honor my oath of office to protect and defend the Constitution of the United States. The Framers established the impeachment process because they feared a man like Donald Trump would one day hold the presidency.
