A native of St. Louis, Missouri, Matthew Helfant has worked in Congressman Cleaver's Washington office since February 2017. Helfant previously served as Cleaver's Staff Assistant, Legislative Correspondent, Legislative Aide, and Digital Director. Before joining Cleaver's congressional office, Helfant interned in the Office of Senator Claire McCaskill (D-MO) and the Office of Missouri State Senator Shalonn Kiki Curls (D-09). A graduate of the University of Missouri-Columbia, Helfant will oversee Cleaver's communications operation, manage national media relations, and handle day-to-day media outreach in Washington. Formerly, Sarmiento served as Senior Advisor for Public Policy to Mayor Sly James. Prior to his role in the Mayor's Office, he worked as a communications aide in the 2016 Democratic National Convention Committee. Sarmiento is also an alumnus of the prestigious Congressional Hispanic Caucus Institute where he served in the Office of Congresswoman Marcia Fudge (D-OH). He is also a former intern from Congressman Emanuel Cleaver's District Office. Sarmiento will effectively manage Missouri media relations and lead day-to-day District communications.
