The WGRG is a non-partisan, independent volunteer association founded to enrich the careers and leadership abilities of African American government relations professionals. To be sure, I am honored, and a bit overwhelmed, to be presented with this esteemed award. When I realized the other award winners, like my friends Van Jones of CNN who is receiving the Lucile H. Bluford award and Senator Doug Jones and Congressman Hakeem Jeffries who are being honored with the Adam Clayton Powell Award, I am humbled, said Congressman Cleaver. When asked about receiving such an award at such a contentious time in Washington, Congressman Cleaver said what is happening now will determine whether the U.S. will end up on the ash heap of history. He shrugged and said, History is a long story about human beings and nations that took a wrong road. Today, the overwhelming majority of Americans believe that we are going in the wrong direction. The award was presented on Wednesday, July 24th at the Tenth Annual Tin Cup Dinner at the Newseum in Washington, D.C. Emanuel Cleaver, II is the U.S. Representative for Missouri's Fifth Congressional District, which includes Kansas City, Independence, Lee's Summit, Raytown, Grandview, Sugar Creek, Blue Springs, Grain Valley, Oak Grove, North Kansas City, Gladstone, Claycomo, and all of Ray, Lafayette, and Saline Counties.
