I was one of the last Members on the House Floor supporting U.S. Capitol Police, knowing full well the tragic events of that day. My recent comments in a serious Oversight hearing investigation pertaining to a single isolated video have been continually and outrageously misconstrued by a dishonest media looking to characterize 75 million conservative voters as domestic terrorists. To date, I am unaware of a single charge or conviction of sedition or insurrection levied against a January 6th rioter, nor has any official branch, agency, or investigative body of our government reached a conclusion regarding that day's events. My work as a legislator is to write, debate, and pass laws based on facts and reality, not clickbait headlines. Through our investigative work within the Committee on Oversight and Reform, we must occasionally address uncomfortable, nuanced details, under the confines of a five-minute time limit, and I will continue to push back against the Left’s politically convenient rhetoric and outright misinformation. The actions that led to what occurred on January 6th – and the security breaches of the U.S. Capitol complex – have real consequences for the rule of law and our national security and should be investigated and reviewed to the fullest extent possible. This is to the benefit of Members of the House, their staff, the U.S. Capitol Police, and numerous support personnel. Multiple Congressional committees, in addition to the Office of the Architect of the Capitol, are already conducting a review of the day’s events and a modernization of security policies.
