The P-EBT program allows families with children who are eligible for free or reduced-price lunches to receive food benefits if their schools shut down or they are otherwise not able to attend school due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Press accounts indicate the state plans to discard the benefits cards for those it has not reached though eligible students' schools by an arbitrary deadline. The letter reads in part: In the middle of a devastating pandemic and painful economic downturn, the state of Tennessee must to do everything it can to ensure that our state's low-income children receive the food aid to which they are entitled. As these are federally appropriated funds, it is in incumbent on us to ensure this program is utilized by the people for whom it was intended. We respectfully request that you halt any plans to throw away P-EBT cards, and instead distribute these cards directly to eligible families.
