Congressman Cohen made the following statement: “I am saddened to learn of the passing of Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee. We worked together for 18 years in the House Judiciary Committee, fighting for civil rights, women’s rights, and democracy. I cosponsored her landmark Juneteenth National Independence Day Act, which established Juneteenth as a federal holiday. I recall presiding over a hearing to consider another of her historic bills, the Commission to Study and Develop Reparation Proposals for African-Americans Act. I also cosponsored this legislation which supported the creation of a commission to recommend remedies to slavery. Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee is the second coming of Barbara Jordan— another titan in American politics. I was fortunate to share time with this legendary lady. May she rest in peace.” ### | 1 | 2026-03-30T01:40:41Z | 2026-04-06T18:32:29Z |
