September 17 marks the 233rd anniversary of the formal signing of the U.S. Constitution in 1787 and has been variously known as Constitution Day, Citizenship Day and, since 2004, as Constitution Day and Citizenship Day. Congressman Cohen made the following statement: The importance of our nation's founding document becomes clearer with each passing day. We are a nation of laws, not individuals, and our Constitution establishes liberties and constrains power in a complex tissue of freedoms and responsibilities. I'm proud that my duties as Chairman of the House Judiciary Subcommittee on the Constitution, Civil Rights and Civil Liberties allow me to reflect daily on protecting the sacred rights enshrined in our national charter and making them better appreciated by all Americans.
