I also thanked our veterans, particularly those last remaining members of the Greatest Generation from World War II, for their service and sacrifice. I renewed my ongoing effort to have Attorney General William Barr impeached for his outrageous efforts to sow doubt and suspicion about election results. I also spent this week preparing for the lame duck session of Congress, which begins next week. I also renewed efforts torepeal the Electoral College, which has distorted the results of our elections and undermined the will of the people. I reminded constituents that the abbreviated open enrollment period for Healthcare.gov policies authorized by the Affordable Care Act is under way even as Trump and some Republican state attorneys general argued at the Supreme Court this week to repeal the law and its protections. Demanding that President Trump Concede Defeat Commemorating Veterans Day Renewing Efforts to Impeach Attorney General Barr Planning to Return to Washington For Beginning of Lame Duck Encouraging a Serious Focus on Repealing the Electoral College Reminding Constituents Healthcare.gov Open Enrollment has Begun Weekly Health Tip Quote of the Week Demanding that President Trump Concede Defeat It is clear that the 2020 Election is over and that Joe Biden will be our next President. Nonetheless, President Trump is refusing to concede and, through some desperate actions, continues to sow doubt about the results while making last-minute appointments that suggest he will resist a peaceful transfer of power. Be assured I am paying close attention to these developments and will do all I can to protect the will of the American people and the rule of law at this perilous moment in our nation's history. Commemorating Veterans Day On Tuesday, I released a statement commemorating Veterans Day and called on all to recognize their service and sacrifice, particularly the remaining few from World War II. I continue to work to make sure our veterans receive the medical, educational and other benefits they have earned. See my statement honoring these dedicated men and women here. Renewing Efforts to Impeach Attorney General Barr Throughout Bill Barr's tenure as Attorney General, he has repeatedly undermined our judicial system and perverted the rule of law. In June, I introduced H. Res. 1032, which would instruct the House Judiciary Committee to look into his impeachment. Since then, and particularly since his post-election efforts to cast doubt on and sow confusion about the results by authorizing specious investigations by the Department of Justice, I have renewed my efforts to advance Barr's impeachment. While it is obvious that time won't permit a trial in the Senate before his term in office ends, having the House go on record about his unacceptable conduct will serve as an important historical condemnation of his tenure.See an article in The Nation noting my leadership on this issue here. Planning to Return to Washington Next Week to start Lame Duck Session Next week, the House will reconvene and take up several measures the American people need to see resolved. Negotiations on a coronavirus relief package are still stalled. The House has acted, but we are still waiting for the Senate to act to find a compromise. I continue to urge that a compromise package be voted uponso we can help rush resources to those in need as soon as possible. Encouraging a Serious Focus on Repealing the Electoral College This week, it became clear again why we mustrepeal the Electoral College. This anachronistic institution now regularly distorts the outcomes of our elections and thwarts the will of American voters. The Electoral College is hugely unpopular and clearly undermines the popular will. It is past time to get a successful repeal effort under way now -- before our next presidential election. Reminding Constituents Healthcare.gov Open Enrollment has Begun The Healthcare.gov open enrollment period began November 1 and will end on December 15th. It is important for you to review your options during this period. If you are on Medicare or if your employer offers qualified health insurance in which you are enrolled, you're already covered and won't need to enter the Marketplace for your health coverage. If you aren't sure whether or not you should use the Marketplace to get insurance, call the Marketplace Hotline at1-800-318-2596, visitwww.Healthcare.gov,or you can always call my office at (901) 544-4131.You can also call the Marketplace Hotline or my office to find out ifTennCare(Tennessee's Medicaid program) is a coverage option for you.During this devastating pandemic, health coverage is more important than ever, and I have worked to expand access to affordable and comprehensive health care.Additionally, Iwill continue to urgeGovernor Lee to expand Medicaid under the Affordable Care Act which wouldprovidecoverage to thousands of Tennesseans. This week, the Trump Administration argued before the Supreme Court to repeal the Affordable Care Act in its entirety, including its protections for people with pre-existing conditions. I vow to strengthen the law in the coming Congress. Weekly Health Tip On Thursday, Shelby County reported 2,290 people hospitalized with COVID-19, up again from the previous week. Cases have been rising since late September; 603 of our neighbors have died so far this year. So, again this week, I want to call attention to the high number of coronavirus cases in Tennessee and rising across the country, that are likely the result of reopening prematurely and a lack of state and nationwide coordination without implementing basic precautionary measures such as wearing masks and adhering to social distancing guidelines. Please follow the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) protocols and those adopted by Memphis and Shelby County for staying safe in this ongoing pandemic: Wash your hands with soap frequently for at least 25 seconds; keep a minimum social distance of six feet from others; wear a face mask when out in public; and avoid being in crowds of more than 10. When you're indoors, six feet might not be far enough, according to recent studies; 14 feet might be better. It is best to wear a mask, particularly when indoors in close quarters. Please be mindful of these precautionary measures as we enter the holiday season. Keeping loved ones safe is critical to keeping our community safe. We must work together to get through this.
