Voting to Pass Major Spending Bills Supporting Memphis Priorities On Tuesday, I votedfor one of twomajor spending bills funding the federal government through next September and avoiding another government shutdown.I was proud to vote forrecord highfunding forthe National Institutes of Health(NIH), Child Care Community Block Grants, Head Start,andTitle Ieducation programs.It also provides $25 millionto the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and NIHfor gun injury and mortality preventionresearch.The bill alsoraises the age for purchasing tobacco products to 21,a cause I have supported for a long time.See my release on ithere. Voting to Pass U.S.-Mexico-Canada Trade Agreement On Thursday, I voted for, and the House passed, the U.S.-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA),which will modernizetrade arrangements between the three countries. Many of its provisionsare marked improvements over the 1994 North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA).The new agreement requires Mexico to change its labor laws, deals more fairly with prescription drug patents, and advances environmental protection of marine wildlife from pollution and overfishing.See my release about ithere. Criticizingthe NCAA for James Wiseman's Decision I blame the NCAA for the unfortunate situation that led our University of Memphis star James Wiseman towithdraw from the Universityand prepare for the NBA draft.I believe the NCAA should face tough questions aboutitsmethods of disproportionate punishment and wish James the best as he prepares for the NBA.Please see my release about this sad developmenthere. Congratulating the Murray Sisters of Cordova for Winning Congressional AppChallenge Earlier this week, Jayda and Anaya Murray of Cordova won the Congressional AppChallengefor the 9th Congressional District of Tennessee with their Safety U app. The app presents a series of unsafe situations an entering freshman might encounter at college and offers a range of options for dealing with them. I want to congratulate them for their innovation and engagement with computer science. See my release about themhere. Writing in Opposition to Block-GrantingTennCare To be on record for the official comment period, I submitted a letter totheCenters for Medicare and Medicaid Services opposing Tennessee's block grant proposal. I remain gravely concerned about what this could mean for Memphians andresidents of the Ninth District. Thousands in our community depend onTennCareto survive, and Governor Lee's priorities have been focused on rural counties rather than cities like Memphis. I have fought tirelessly to expand access to affordable health care, and I believe this block grant would do nothing but harm Memphians. See my letterhere. Announcing $13.3 Million in Head Start Grants On Thursday, I announced the Shelby County Board of Education and Porter-Leathwould be receiving a combined $13.3 million in Head Start grants. Announcing $4 Million Grant to Foote Park at South City On Tuesday, I announced that Memphis will be receiving a $4 million Department of Housing and Urban Development grant for Foote Park at South City. Announcing $872,000 in Research Grants to UTHSC and St. Jude On Monday, the National Institutes of Health informed my office that the University of Tennessee Health Science Center (UTHSC) and St. Jude Children's Research Hospital will be receiving research grantstotaling $872,000. Our values are enshrined in our Constitution: liberty, equality, and opportunity. We are a self-governing people, where every person is equal before the law. In the United States, we don't have a king. We choose our leaders. We vote. Generations of Americans have fought --and some have died to secure these inalienable rights. The Constitution begins, We the people of the United States.' That's us. It's not we the leaders of Russia, Ukraine, or China,' or we the Democrats' or we the Republicans.' It's We the people of the United States' and all Americans -- and only Americans -- get to have a say in our elections. Donald Trump used the high power of the Presidency to pressure a foreign nation to besmirch his perceived primary political opponent. He corrupted our elections and compromised our national security so that he could keep power. Not power for the people power for himself. In 2016, Candidate Trump called for foreign interference when he said, Russia, if you are listening' In 2019, President Trump sought foreign interference when he needed a favor' from Ukraine to intervene in the 2020 election. President Trump attacked, and is a continuing threat, to our system of free and fair elections. Like all of you, I took an oath to support and to defend the Constitution. I urge my colleagues to abide by that oath and stand up to President Trump's abuse of power and obstruction of Congress. To my colleagues on both sides of the aisle, I appeal to your patriotism and implore you to defend free and fair elections and preserve the Constitution. God Save the United States of America.
