We discussed with Under Secretary Young and Director David Dunning the problems with the Memphis VA Medical Center and possible solutions that have been proposed by VA administrators to address these problems. I also penned an op-ed in The Commercial Appeal on the problems at the Memphis VA and expressing my optimism that Director Dunning is the right person to lead the hospital. You can read my op-ed here. Joining Tavis Smiley on PBS On Thursday night, I joined Tavis Smiley on PBS to discuss my intentions to introduce articles of impeachment against President Donald Trump. You can watch my interview here.  Fighting to Make Food Stamps More Available On Monday, Tennessee Governor Bill Haslam announced that Tennessee would reinstate workforce requirements for Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) recipients in most counties in Tennessee, including Shelby County, beginning February 1, 2018. Memphians should not be allowed to go hungry, and while I am awaiting more details about how the Governor’s workforce requirement policy for food stamps will be implemented, I fear that is what may happen. Read my full statement here. Cracking Down on Predatory Lending Practices On Wednesday, Senator Dick Durbin (D-IL), Senator Jeff Merkley (D-OR), Congressman Matt Cartwright (D-PA) and I introduced the Protecting Consumers from Unreasonable Credit Rates Act to crack down on predatory lending practices. This legislation would eliminate the excessive rates and fees that many consumers are charged for payday loans, car title loans, and other types of credit. All 9th District residents should be aware of precautionary measures that can help ensure their financial security.  If you believe your data may have been compromised, there are steps you can take. These include: regularly monitoring your accounts, creating additional alerts for your credit report, and placing a security freeze on your credit report, which prevents others from opening up accounts in your name without your knowledge. The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFBP) published a helpful guide, which you can find here, on how to secure your identity following the Equifax data breach. If you have any questions or are in need of assistance, please do not hesitate to contact my office at (901) 544-4131 or visit my website at https://cohen.house.gov/contact/email.  Bringing Congress to your Corner On Friday, September 29, 11:00am to 1:00pm, my office will hold “Congress on your Corner” office hours at the North Branch Library (1192 Vollintine Ave). If you have questions or problems with Social Security, Medicare, FHA, the VA or any other federal agencies, my staff and I will be on hand to answer questions and provide assistance. We hope you can make it.   The Congressional App Challenge The Congressional App Challenge is a competition aimed at encouraging U.S. K-12 students to learn how to code by creating their own applications, or “apps.” The Congressional App Challenge is open to all students in the Ninth Congressional District of Tennessee. As always, it is best to check with your doctor before making any changes to your diet, exercise routine or lifestyle. September is Healthy Aging Month. Exercising regularly and eating a balanced, nutritious diet can help maintain a healthy body and brain and slow the aging process. Read more about how to maintain a healthy lifestyle here. As always, I remain.  Most sincerely,   Steve Cohen Member of Congress 1 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z
