With the support of every Republican in the U.S. House of Representatives, Cole filed an amendment to restore the Hyde and Weldon amendment language that is traditionally carried in the Labor-HHS-Education Appropriations title following its removal in the House Appropriations Committee markup for fiscal year 2022. Cole's amendment was submitted today to the House Rules Committee in response to the panel's amendment process guidance here. First enacted in 1976, the Hyde Amendment prohibits federal tax dollars from funding abortions and has been included in appropriations bills every year since then with bipartisan, bicameral support. First authored in 2005 and included in annual appropriations every year since then, the Weldon Amendment protects American doctors, nurses and other health care professionals from participating in or providing an abortion if they have a moral objection; it has also been supported by members across the aisle and the Capitol since it was first enacted. "Regardless of one's personal views, lawmakers and presidents of both parties have always agreed that Americans should not be forced to pay for abortions with their tax dollars," said Cole. "Despite decades of strong bipartisan support for the Hyde Amendment, Democrats are abandoning key protections that have saved millions of precious lives and upheld the conscience rights of all Americans. Not only is this action wrong, but it contradicts the beliefs of the majority of Americans. "It is not too late for Democrats to change course and restore the Hyde and Weldon amendments before legislation reaches the House floor.
