We need to pass a government funding bill and hopefully secure assistance for Coronavirus relief. I've received calls from constituents throughout the Seventh District asking for my support on Line 3 and I contacted the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers for an update on the project. I encouraged them to review the findings of Minnesota's state agencies and issue the permits needed to continue with the replacement. The Enbridge Line 3 replacement will have a significant economic impact in Western Minnesota. It is worth noting that even as passions ran high throughout the country, millions of Americans were able to peacefully choose their political leaders. I have been honored to be a part of this great system of self-governance and to have been entrusted with the great responsibility of representing the people of Western Minnesota for all these years. Peterson Minnesota 7th District Serving the 7th Line 3 Replacement Permitting I called Colonel Karl Jansen of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to get an update on the permitting process and emphasize my support for the Line 3 Replacement Project. The Minnesota Pollution Control Agency (MPCA) is expected to sign off on their review of the project in the coming weeks that will be used by the Army Corps for their consideration of permits. I encouraged Colonel Jansen to quickly review MPCA's findings and issue the relevant permits so the project may move forward. The Line 3 Replacement will provide an economic boost for western Minnesota and I look forward to seeing the project move forward in Minnesota. Newsstand Minnesota Biofuel Update In 2007, Minnesota adopted the Next Generation Energy Act, which set a goal to replace 30% of the state's petroleum with biofuels by 2025. To meet its carbon emissions reduction target, the Governor's Council on Biofuels recently recommended Minnesota should adopt a low-carbon fuel standard (LCFS) program and accelerate the state's move toward 15% ethanol content in gasoline (E15). The Council on Biofuels also recommended that all new fuel storage and delivery systems be compatible with E25 within 18 months. Since 1997, Minnesota was the first state to require biofuel blends and has the possibility of becoming the first state to implement an E15 standard. According to Rep. Jeanne Poppe, Chairwoman of the Minnesota House Agriculture and Food Finance and Policy Division, nine out of ten cars can use E15. To ensure all qualified individuals receive economic relief, the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) set National EIP Registration Day to encourage non-filers to apply for an Economic Impact Payment (EIP). If you did not file a 2019 federal tax return, did not get an Economic Impact Payment, or did not register for an Economic Impact Payment already, you may qualify for an EIP. Use the IRS Non-Filers Tool by November 21 to register for an EIP. Photo courtesy of The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs On Wednesday, November 11, we remember and give thanks to all those who have served in our military to protect the United States and our democracy. While the Treaty of Versailles officially ended World War I in 1919, fighting ceased between Allied nations and Germany seven months prior on the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month in 1918. One year later, on November 11, 1919, President Woodrow Wilson commemorated the first Armistice Day. It wasn't until 1954 when President Dwight Eisenhower signed H.R. 7786 changing Armistice Day to Veterans Day, a day dedicated to world peace and to honor veterans on the 11th day of November each year. Woodrow Wilson said, "To us in America, the reflections of Armistice Day will be filled with solemn pride in the heroism of those who died in the country's service and with gratitude for the victory, both because of the thing from which it has freed us and because of the opportunity it has given America to show her sympathy with peace and justice in the councils of the nations".
