I am grateful to the constituents of Minnesota's Seventh District for entrusting me to hold this office for the last 30 years. It has been an honor to serve as your Representative in Washington, D.C. and I am thankful to all those I've met, worked with, and assisted. This year's celebrations will be different as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, but we can still reflect on all that we have to be grateful for and do what we can to stay safe and end this pandemic together. Peterson Minnesota 7th District Serving the 7th The bipartisan 2018 Farm Bill legalized hemp in order to create economic opportunities for farmers. Minnesota farmers appreciate the United States Department of Agriculture's (USDA) efforts in implementing the Interim Rule on Establishment of a Domestic Hemp Production Program. However, there are still hurdles in place for Minnesota farmers to fully realize the economic benefits of growing hemp. I joined Minnesota Representatives Angie Craig (D-MN-2), Betty McCollum (D-MN-4) and Senator Tina Smith in sending a letter to USDA Secretary Perdue, Office of Management and Budget (OMB) Director Vought, Food and Drug Administration (FDA) Commissioner Hahn, and Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) Acting Administrator Shea, urging them to provide clarity on hemp rules. In order to create a more stable market for hemp farmers and ease the concerns of investors, the USDA, the DEA, the FDA, and the OMB need to work together and issue federal guidelines that will benefit rather than punish farmers for factors that are out of their control. Photo courtesy of Jennie-O Turkey Store Congratulations to Jennie-O for making its inaugural appearance in the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade. For the first time, the annual holiday parade will feature a giant float sponsored by the Willmar-based Jennie-O Turkey Store, which is celebrating its 80th anniversary. Measuring 36 feet long, 25 feet wide, and 24 feet tall, the float will include feathers, glitter, a crew of dancers, and a celebrity singer. Dubbed the Big Turkey Spectacular, the Jennie-O float is making its debut appearance in the parade as part of a three-year commitment by Jennie-O. Click here to read more here. This Week in History Photo courtesy of Lake of the Woods County This week in history, on November 28, 1922, the Lake of the Woods County was established. In November of 1922, voters from the Lake of the Woods area cast their vote to separate from Beltrami County. Residents were dissatisfied with the services they had been receiving from Beltrami County and constituents found it was difficult to travel to the county seat, leading to their separation and the formation of Minnesota's youngest county. Today, the county attractions are much the same as they were when pioneers settled - fishing, hunting, forest, water, clean air and spacious land.
