Over 68,000 vehicles cross the bridge every day and commuters who rely on this bridge deserve to travel safely to and from work. Closing the Memorial Bridge would cost local governments a projected $168,000 per day ($75 million per year) by 2021 in transportation outlays alone, according to the Metropolitan Washington Council of Governments. It is critical that we repair the bridge now, instead of resulting in costly closures later on. “For the past three years, my office has been working to support efforts to secure much needed funds through whatever means necessary from annual appropriations requests, endorsing grant applications, and communicating with administration officials including, multiple cabinet secretaries. “I am pleased that my friend and former colleague, Secretary Ryan Zinke has announced $227 million for this major infrastructure project to rehabilitate Arlington Memorial Bridge. This is exactly the right thing to do, repairing the bridge now is projected to save $35 million and reduce construction time by a year and a half. It is a win-win decision, making sense financially and for our commuters including many from Virginia’s Tenth District. This is an essential infrastructure improvement for the region and fortunately minor repairs will begin in early 2018 and major construction is scheduled to follow soon after in the fall.” | 1 | 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z | 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z |
