Cook Cosponsors Emergency Wildfire and Public Safety Act 2020-09-16 2020 2020-09 Republican House CA Paul Cook C001094 cook.house.gov     legacy WASHINGTON Rep. Paul Cook (R- Apple Valley) announced today that he is cosponsoring H.R. 7978, the Emergency Wildfire and Public Safety Act. This bipartisan legislation was introduced by Rep. Doug LaMalfa (CA-01) and Rep. Jimmy Panetta (CA-20). The bill reduces wildfire risk in our forests by implementing wildfire prevention projects, focusing on areas that are particularly at high-risk for wildfires. It also expands the use of technology such as sensors, cameras, and satellites to monitor conditions and assist in better wildfire response. Additionally, the bill provides energy and retrofitting assistance to help protect homes and businesses from future wildfires. Rep. Cook said, Much of the American West, and particularly California, has experienced horrific wildfires this year. It's clear that we must do more to protect our communities and critical resources from the dangerous threat of wildfires. This legislation is a good step forward, has strong bipartisan support, and I'm hopeful Congress will act quickly to pass this bill so the President can sign it into law. Senator Dianne Feinstein (CA) and Senator Steve Daines (MT) introduced S. 4431, the companion legislation in the Senate. This bill was heard today in the Senate Committee on Energy and Natural Resources, Subcommittee on Public Lands, Forests, and Mining. A member of the House Natural Resources and Armed Services Committees, Cook served as an infantry officer and retired after 26 years as a Colonel in the U.S. Marine Corps. During his time in combat, he was awarded the Bronze Star and two Purple Hearts. 1 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z
