Paul Cook (R-Apple Valley), Republican Leader Kevin McCarthy, and California Senators Dianne Feinstein and Kamala Harris sent a letter in support of the Navy's funding request for earthquake recovery efforts at Naval Air Weapons Station (NAWS) China Lake. The letter was directed to the Senate and House Appropriations Committees as they review their respective Defense and Military Construction Appropriations bills. NAWS China Lake is a critical national asset with major laboratories and testing facilities, highly instrumented ranges, and more than 4,000 civilian and military employees. In July 2019, China Lake was the epicenter of two major earthquakes and suffered significant damages to critical infrastructure, command facilities, and equipment. The Navy continues to evaluate the extent of the damage and has updated its needs assessment to $1.78 billion for defense and military construction appropriations. Rep. Cook said, The damages from the July earthquakes are detrimental to China Lake's mission readiness. Congress has a duty to ensure these bases are safe and operational for our men and women in uniform as they defend our national security. I urge the Senate and House Appropriations Committees to provide this essential funding. A member of the House Natural Resources and Armed Services Committees, Congressman Cook served as an infantry officer and retired after 26 years as a Colonel in the U.S. Marine Corps.
