TJ Cox (CA-21)has been very active in this process, fighting for Central Valley priorities often ignored in the funding process.Without legislative action to authorize necessary operating expenses, the government was set to shut down on December 20th. A shutdown would have resulted in a freeze in military pay, critical health and safety programs across the country being halted, and billions of dollars in lost revenue from the economy. Congressman Coxhas advocated forCentral Valleyagriculture since day one. In order to make sure the Central Valleygetsneededresources,Coxhosted Rep. Barbara Lee in the districtin May. Rep. Lee, who is the onlyCaliforniamemberof Congresson theAgricultureAppropriationsSubcommittee, was able to learn how important the citrus industry is to the Central Valley and how important the need for strong research funding is needed in order to combat pest and disease that threaten farmers crops. Farmers and ranchers are the lifeblood of the Valley and without strong investment at the federal level, they are left defenseless against the challenges they face daily. I was excited to show Rep. Lee around my district so she can see firsthand how these federal resources are being responsibly utilized and how important the agriculture industry is to theState of California and to the United States. Rep. Cox secured funding for agriculture priorities that will help the Valley family farmers and ranchers of California's 21stDistrict through the following funding programs: Citrus Greening Research Citrus Health Response Teamis a critical investmentthatensures that publicly funded researchis strengthenedin order to protect the California Citrus industry from the devastatingeffectsof Citrus Greening. Congressman Cox led the effort amongst citrus state membersto secure an increase of$8 milliondollars from 2019 levels. Agriculture and Food Research Initiative (AFRI):Due to California's broad and diverse specialty crop industry, robust support for public research is needed to ensure that the mostaffectiveand safe tools are available to farmers and ranchers to combat pest and disease targeting their crops and animals. Congressman Cox joined lawmakers in petitioning appropriators to increase federal funding for agriculture research, resulting in $425 million being appropriated. This is a $10 million increase from 2019. Farm & Ranch Stress AssistanceNetwork:Due to the recent downturn in the agriculture economy, stress from the trade war and in general the struggles farmers and ranchers face daily, resources have never been needed more to ensure that adequality trained and equipped mental health services are available to farmers and ranchers in their most desperate time of need.
