Congressman Kevin Cramer joined other state and federal officials in honoring former U.S. Secretary of Agriculture and North Dakota Governor Ed Schafer in a ceremony renaming the Red River Valley Agricultural Research Center at North Dakota State University the Edward T. Schafer Agricultural Research Center. Cramer introduced H.R. 2154, authorizing the name change, which was passed by the House of Representatives on May 17, 2017 and the Senate on March 14, 2017. It was signed into law by President Trump on March 27. Schafer was U.S. Agriculture Secretary from 2008 to 2009 and NorthDakota Governor from 1992 to 2000. Cramer praised him for his contributions to agriculture in North Dakota and the state, and for appreciating how public policy impacts people. There is no one more deserving of recognition for his work and commitment to our state and agriculture than Ed, said Cramer. He is a role model to me, and many others, living his life as example for how we all should serve. I look forward to all the work the Edward T. Schafer Agricultural Research Center will continue to do to advance agriculture. Also speaking at the ceremony was USDA Agricultural Research Service Administrator and Acting Deputy Under Secretary Research, Education, and Economics (REE) Dr. Chavonda Jacobs-Young, who said, The Edward T. Schafer Agricultural Research Center will serve as a permanent reminder that, as citizens and as stewards of the public trust, we have a shared responsibility to improve the health and welfare of everyone in this country.
