Congressman Kevin Cramer supported a bill this week simplifying the privacy policy requirements for finance institutions making auto loans. H.R. 2396, the Privacy Notification Technical Clarification Act, eliminates the requirement for auto financial companies to mail physical copies of their annual privacy notifications. The bill allows institutions to include their privacy policy electronically or on the billing statement. It does not modify privacy policies that are in place or the requirement for financial institutions to disclose them, but it streamlines the process of keeping consumers updated in a resourceful process. Oftentimes, these financial institutions do not make changes to their privacy policies, but are still required to mail hundreds of pages of information. The legislation passed by the House reduces the redundant and unclear information being sent to consumers, and brings attention to important announcements a financial provider would send physically. Being able to request and view your lending privacy policy online is a commonsense solution to the unnecessary amount of mail folks are receiving, said Cramer. This bill corrects a practice that bombards consumers with unnecessary mailers, and removes this nonsensical regulation that has hurt auto lenders and community financial institutions. In the 114th Congress, the House passed the Eliminate Privacy Notice Confusion Act so unchanged privacy policies do not require distribution.
