(Mac) Thornberry National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) for FY 2021. The $732 billion national defense bill passed both the House and Senate earlier this month with an overwhelming veto-proof margin. The veto override vote passed today by a vote of 322-87. Trump's veto of the defense bill comes following reports of an unprecedented Russian cyberattack on the U.S. government and businesses, further endangering our national defense and readiness while simultaneously undermining the wellbeing of those serving our nation in uniform. America has passed a defense bill for 59 consecutive years, and this year will continue that streak as the House has spoken with an overwhelming, bipartisan voice, overriding the President's veto, said Congressman Crist. This strongly bipartisan defense bill puts our country, our national defense, and our troops, first. Congressman Crist has been a vocal supporter of this year's NDAA, fighting for inclusion of Crist-championed provisions putting local veterans, servicemembers and our military readiness first, such as: Protecting the hard-earned benefits of Coast Guard retirees from future government shutdowns through Crist's Coast Guard Retirement Parity Act; Helping veterans find jobs quicker after their service by studying the transferability of military certifications to civilian life; Exposing the unfair practice of using family medical records to deny enlistees from military families when they try to join the military as adults; Holding the pentagon accountable for delivering on the Crist effort to prepare and protect MacDill and other bases from sea level rise and climate change. The legislation also includes important policy to: Confront our adversaries like Russia and China by supporting our alliances, fully funding the European Deterrence Initiative, investigating Russian bounties on servicemembers being killed by terrorists, and authorizing a $2.2 billion Pacific Deterrence Initiative to contain China; Secure our free and fair elections by allowing the State Department to offer rewards for providing information on foreign election interference; Institute a 3% pay raise for servicemembers and increased Hazardous Duty Pay to $275 a month; Provide long-overdue benefits for Agent Orange-exposed veterans by adding Parkinsonism, bladder cancer, and hypothyroidism to the Agent Orange Presumptive List; Protect families in military housing, like those at MacDill AFB, by updating minimum health and safety standards for government-owned housing, repealing a law that allows the DOD to place families in substandard housing units, and requiring DOD to implement all Government Accountability Office recommendations for improvements. | 1 | 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z | 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z |
