Today, the U.S. House of Representatives passed H.R. 2157, the Additional Supplemental Appropriations for Disaster Relief Act, which provides comprehensive disaster recovery funding for communities in the Midwest and across the country that have been ravaged by recent flooding, wildfires, hurricanes, and other natural disasters. This bipartisan legislation includes an amendment introduced by Rep. Joe Cunningham to restore funding for the Goose Creek Nuclear Power Training School. The disaster relief package was also approved by the Senate, and it will now be sent to the President to be signed into law. Cunningham's amendment provides the Air Force with an additional $270 million in supplemental funding to repair Tyndall and Offutt Air Force Bases, which were damaged by recent hurricanes and flooding. If the Air Force does not receive this funding, they would need to divert funds from 61 projects in 18 states, including the expansion of the nuclear power training school at Joint Base Charleston. The Cunningham amendment would ensure the school has the resources they need to renovate and expand their training facilities. The Goose Creek Nuclear Power Training Unit teaches students the highly-technical skills needed to operate and maintain our nuclear-powered, naval fleet, and will be responsible for training all of the nearly 3,000 new nuclear engineers the Navy requires, starting this year. Bottom line, the Goose Creek Nuclear Power Training School is absolutely fundamental to the operational success and readiness of the United States Navy, said Rep. Joe Cunningham. I am proud that the House and the Senate passed my bipartisan amendment, and I will continue supporting our servicemembers and the Lowcountry military installations that keep our country safe. Rep. Cunningham has made ensuring Lowcountry military installations have the resources they need one of his top priorities in Congress. Last month, after Cunningham wrote a letter to the House Appropriations Subcommittee on Military Construction and Veterans' Affairs, the Subcommittee voted to approve an additional $546 million to fund Navy and Marine Corps construction projects that were not included in the President's budget request for Fiscal Year 2020. Among those unfunded projects was the Marine Corps' request for $37.2 million to modernize and improve a live-fire training range aboard Marine Corps Recruit Depot Parris Island.
