Joe Cunningham (SC-01) announced his appointment by the Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives to the Board of Visitors of the U.S. Coast Guard Academy. The Board of Visitors oversees morale and discipline, curriculum, instruction, physical equipment, fiscal affairs, and academic methods at the Academy and is comprised of nine Members of Congress and six members nominated by the President. The United States Coast Guard works tirelessly to ensure maritime safety, interdict drugs, provide emergency and disaster response, and keep coastal communities like those in the Lowcountry safe, said Rep. Joe Cunningham. It is an honor to be appointed to the Coast Guard Academy Board of Visitors and I am humbled by the opportunity to continue to nurture the cooperative relationship between the Coast Guard Academy and Congress. The U.S. Coast Guard Academy, in New London, CT, is an elite professional college ranked among the nation's most prestigious universities. Each year, approximately 200 graduates of the Academy earn their commissions as officers in the U.S. Coast Guard, charged with ensuring the safety and security of our nation's waters. Cunningham has made supporting the Coast Guard one of his top priorities in Congress. Earlier this year, he secured an amendment to the National Defense Authorization Act that would expand eligibility to a DoD program which provides military spouses pursuing a degree or certification up to $4,000 of financial assistance to Coast Guard spouses. He also passed an amendment to establish a Coast Guard Junior Reserve Officer training program in Mt. Pleasant.
