Today, Congressman Joe Cunningham (SC-01) announced House passage of H.R. 2740, the Labor, Health and Human Services, Education, Legislative Branch, Defense, State, Foreign Operations, and Energy and Water Development Appropriations Act of 2020. H.R. 2740 includes $138 million to fully fund the Charleston Harbor Deepening Project and other important Lowcountry priorities. Cunningham played a key role in securing money for the project by formally asking the House Appropriations Committee to fully fund the amount requested for the project by the Army Corps of Engineers. The funding bill is for Fiscal Year 2020, which is October 1, 2019 to September 30, 2020. The Port of Charleston is a driver of economic development across our entire state and region. The Charleston Harbor Deepening Project is of vital importance in making sure it remains a world-class port, said Rep. Joe Cunningham. This funding will allow the Port of Charleston to reach its full potential and continue to facilitate economic growth across the Lowcountry. Rep. Cunningham also secured funding for: $30 million in funding for the Defense Community Infrastructure Program to improve community infrastructure surrounding military installations. $53 million increase in funding for NIH Alzheimer's disease research. $10 million in funding for cyber-security institutions at senior military colleges, including the Citadel.
