Joe Cunningham called on the leaders of the House and Senate Armed Services Committee, Chairman James Inhofe, Ranking Member Jack Reed, Chairman Adam Smith, and Ranking Member Mac Thornberry, to retain Amendment 16 to H.R. 2500 in the final version of the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) for Fiscal Year 2020. The amendment authorizes the creation of a Coast Guard Junior Reserve Officers' Training Corps (JROTC) program at Mt. Pleasant's Lucy Beckham High. The Coast Guard can only establish new JROTC programs through authorization from Congress, and there are currently only two Coast Guard JROTC programs in the country. The Coast Guard JROTC program is designed to teach young people critical life skills like leadership, discipline, and integrity that help them become better, more engaged citizens. These skills will serve them well in whatever path they follow after graduation, said Rep. Joe Cunningham.
