Today, the House Veterans' Affairs Committee passed two pieces of legislation introduced by Rep. Joe Cunningham (SC-01), the VA Tele-Hearing Modernization Act and the Women Veterans Health Care Accountability Act. The VA Tele-Hearing Modernization Act would require the Board of Veterans' Appeals to allow veterans with pending appeals to appear before the Board remotely from their personal computers. Currently, the Board, located in Washington, D.C., only conducts tele-hearings from regional benefit offices, meaning veterans have to be present at the specified office for the hearing. In most cases, this forces Lowcountry veterans to drive several hours to the nearest regional office in Columbia. Ranking Member Rep. Phil Roe (R-TN), commended Cunningham for the legislation and expressed his full support, saying, Mr. Cunningham, thank you for helping the VBA [Veteran Board of Appeals] get out of a horse and buggy and finally get into the 21st century It makes sense, it's way past due. The Women Veterans Health Care Accountability Act would direct the VA to conduct a study on access to care for women veterans. This legislation would provide data necessary to ensure female veterans receive the unique care they need and deserve. It was passed as a part of the Deborah Sampson Act. As a member of the House Veterans' Affairs Committee, I'm proud to use my seat at the table to make sure Lowcountry veterans get the benefits and services they are owed, without facing unnecessary barriers to that care, said Rep. Joe Cunningham. These are straightforward, common-sense pieces of legislation that allow veterans to conveniently appeal an adverse decision and ensure female veterans receive the care that meets their specific health needs. Passage out of the House Veterans' Affairs Committee was an important step, and I look forward to swiftly passing both bills on the House floor. | 1 | 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z | 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z |
