Cunningham Votes to Reauthorize the Violence against Women Act 2019-04-04 2019 2019-04 Democrat House SC Joe Cunningham C001122 cunningham.house.gov     legacy Washington D.C. Today, Congressman Joe Cunningham voted to pass H.R. 1585, a bipartisan, robust, long-term Violence Against Women Act reauthorization. Since its passage in 1994, the Violence Against Women Act has equipped our law enforcement and government to aid and protect victims of domestic violence, dating violence, sexual assault, and stalking. Since 1994, the rate of domestic violence has declined by over 50 percent. However, the extent of domestic violence remains way too high. Experts estimate that one in three women in the U.S. still experience domestic violence. Today's critical reauthorization will safeguard, strengthen, andbuild upon these life-saving protections for women across the Lowcountry and South Carolina. I am honored to join my colleagues on both sides of the aisle to pass this vital reauthorization to protect the millions of victims and survivors of domestic violence and sexual assault, said Congressman Joe Cunningham. Today, the House stood up for women across America and reaffirmed that every woman, everywhere, has the right to live free from abuse and fear. By passing the Violence Against Women Act reauthorization, Congress is working in a bipartisan way to ensure all women in the Lowcountry and throughout the nation have the resources they need to seek justice, receive care, and rebuild their lives. This reauthorization fulfills Congress's responsibility to protect all Americans by reaffirming protections for every woman, as well as including vital improvements to address gaps in current law that have been identified by victims, survivors, and advocates. This bipartisan bill: Improves the services available for victims and survivors of domestic violence, dating violence, sexual assault and stalking; Expands the housing protections and financial assistance available for victims and survivors; Invests in tools and resources for law enforcement and evidence-based prevention programs that make our communities safer. 1 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z
