https://cunningham.house.gov/media/press-releases/representative-cunningham-praises-passage-hr-1112-enhanced-background-checks Representative Cunningham Praises Passage of H.R. 1112, the Enhanced Background Checks Act of 2019 2019-02-28 2019 2019-02 Democrat House SC Joe Cunningham C001122 cunningham.house.gov     legacy Washington, D.C. Today, Rep. Joe Cunningham praised the House passage of H.R. 1112, the legislation he introduced with Majority Whip Clyburn and Republican Rep. Peter King. This bipartisan legislation closes the Charleston Loophole' that currently allows the sale of a firearm to proceed by default if a background check is not completed within three days. The bill, which passed out of the U.S. House today on a bipartisan vote, extends the initial background check review period from three to 10 days. In 2016 alone, more than 4,000 firearms were sold to people with criminal records, mental illnesses, or other circumstances that disqualify them from purchasing a firearm under federal law. H.R. 1112 and H.R. 8, which was passed by the House yesterday, are the first pieces of gun safety legislation to pass the House of Representatives in over two decades. Today, members of the House of Representatives addressed those who have lost loved ones due to gun violence not just with thoughts and prayers, but with action, said Rep. Joe Cunningham. It is long past time we closed the Charleston loophole and gave law enforcement the time necessary to make sure dangerous people don't end up with deadly weapons they are prohibited from obtaining. I am incredibly proud we passed this common sense, bipartisan legislation and I urge my colleagues in the Senate to do the same. 1 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z
