December 17, 2017 https://youtu.be/FFIm_XHoiM4 Fox Business Stuart Varney: Not a single Democrat in the Senate will vote for the tax bill Come on in please, Florida Congressman Carlos Curbelo joins us from Florida. Congressman, youve heard the Democrats are moving in lockstep. My position is they are going to miss out on the prosperity vote. Im sure youre going to agree with me. Representative Carlos Curbelo: Stuart, youre right. The degree of intimidation on the left is truly astounding. I have many Democratic colleagues as friends who tell me privately, You know what, theres a lot that we like in this tax bill, but we cant say it publicly because it will ruin our standing within the Party. So youre absolutely right, and this is a shame because this is a bill that has a lot for lower- and middle-income Americans. We all know how hard Marco Rubio fought for that expanded child tax credit. We know the doubling of the standard deduction helps lower-and middle-income families the most. Rate reduction for everyone, and of course, the opportunity for higher paychecks, more and better jobs in this country. So I really hope, and I dont have a lot of hope, but I hope that we can get some Democratic colleagues to come on board and say, You know what, this may not be perfect, but theres a lot of good here, and we cant let the perfect be the enemy of the good. Varney: Congressman, talk to me about the timeline here. Youve talked about a vote in the House and Senate in the early part of this week. Looks like were moving toward a situation where the President could sign the tax deal on Christmas Eve. Is that timeline in place? Curbelo: That is right and that is the goal for this to be a wonderful Christmas, Hanukkah, holiday present for the American people. The House is expected to pass this legislation We feel very good about the vote count. And it looks like the Senate is on its way to passage as well, even though regrettably Senator McCain cannot be there, who is in support of this legislation. We gained Senator Corker, we gained Senator Rubio. So people are feeling fairly optimistic about this in Washington D.C. at the beginning of this week. Varney: Real fast, Congressman. Youre going to be up for reelection 11 months from now. If this tax bill is in place, do you think it enhances your chances of reelection or hurts you because youre associated now with the Trump tax plan? Curbelo: Stuart, people in my district are hard-working. I have a lot of immigrant families here, people who came to this country because they wanted a better life. I have no doubt that every American is going to be better off as a result of this legislation. So I feel very good about this, and I think the country should feel very good about this.
