Equality Michigan presented Congressman Kildee with the award at their Fall Reception Friday, which brought together community and state leaders to honor the work of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) advocates in Michigan. In Congress, he was in the forefront of pushing to strike down the unconstitutional Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA), extending civil rights protections to LGBT Americans and supporting marriage equality. Before the U.S. Supreme Court's landmark ruling in 2015, Congressman Kildeefiled anamicus curiaebriefurging the High Court to strike down Michigan's decades-old discriminatory ban on same-sex marriage.
