The text and intent of the Dodd-Frank Wall Street reform law clearly states that the Deputy Director, in the event of a vacancy in the office of Director, serves as acting Director until a new permanent director is confirmed by the Senate. No one believes that Mr. Mulvaneywho once called the Consumer Bureau a joke and said he wants to eliminate the agencyis looking out for the best interests of consumers. His appointment is the latest attempt by Republicans to dismantle the Consumer Bureau and undermine important consumer protections. Republicans want to take us back to the days of reckless behavior on Wall Street that brought our economy to the brink of collapse in 2008.
