Davids is the vice-chair of the Aviation Subcommittee, under the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee. Due to the coronavirus pandemic, airlines are cancelling an estimated 60 to 80 percent of their flights. But many airlines are placing the burden on consumers to attain refunds for these flights, encouraging them to accept travel vouchers instead. I've heard from Kansans about how difficult it's been to receive a refund for a flight that was cancelled due to circumstances far beyond their control. At a time when millions of Americans are out of work and under enormous financial strain, the last thing they need is a voucher that does nothing to help pay bills or put food on the table. The Department of Transportation must conduct rigorous oversight and ensure that airlines stop forcing passengers to jump through hoops to receive the refund they're entitled to, said Davids. The DOT has issued multiple warnings to airlines about these practices, yet the issue remains. Davids wrote a letter to the DOT asking how it will ensure that regulations around refunds are adhered to, and what plans are in place should airlines continue to stall refunds.
