DeLauro D000216 delauro.house.gov delauro https://delauro.house.gov/media-center/press-releases scraper NEW HAVEN, CT —Congresswoman Rosa DeLauro (CT-03) issued the following statement marking 20 years since the terror attacks of September 11, 2001: "Twenty years ago, today, a coordinated act of senseless terror robbed 2,977 individuals of their lives, injured more than 6,000, and sent our nation into a period of shock and collective grief unlike any before or since. Today, we remember those lost on September 11, 2001. We share in the pain the loved ones left behind have felt every day since. We lift up and honor the women and men, in and out of uniform, who courageously worked in the service of others, despite the grave personal cost. "While twenty years have come and gone since September 11, 2001, the memory of that day stands out starkly against the passage of time. Many of us remember the exact moment we heard the news of the attacks on the Twin Towers in New York City, the Pentagon in Washington, DC, and Flight 93. I recall the sense of despair I felt, as I, along with other Members of Congress, evacuated our offices. We gathered shoulder to shoulder on the steps of our nation's Capitol, not yet allowed to return to the building, but unable to leave in the face of this great tragedy. We stood together, not as Democrats and Republicans or as Senators and Representatives, but as Americans, and we sang ‘God Bless America.' "There are times when words are not enough. Not enough to express the depth of our loss. Not enough to express our gratitude to those who sacrificed their lives in service. Not enough to comfort a nation. After twenty years, I still have not found the right words. Still, I will continue to speak in memory of those who died and pray for those who mourn. 1 2026-03-30T01:40:41Z 2026-04-06T20:17:01Z
