This report on the status of reunifying children with their families and how much the Trump Administration's government-sanctioned child abuse has cost taxpayers is the first step towards holding those responsible accountable. After months of requesting this information to no avail, we now know that this debacle has cost upwards of $80 millionmore than $30,000 on average for every child that was separated from their family. That is outrageous, and the Administration never should have implemented such a cruel policy, much less shifted $80 million from critical programs such as Head Start, HIV/AIDS treatment, or cancer research to pay for it. Still, there are many questions that remain. What is going to be the effect on the children whose parents were deported or made the tragic decision to waive reunification because they fear for their child's safety in their home country? What exactly were the offenses of the 30 parents who are not eligible to be reunited? It has been at least seven months since the Trump administration began traumatizing thousands of families and they still have not fully resolved this tragedy. I will continue to press the Administration for answers over the coming days and in the new Congress. A full copy of the report can be found here.
