Shared on Rep. Denham’s Facebook, Twitter and YouTube pages, this #TVT video is an excerpt from a longer interview for the Library of Congress’ Veterans History Project. Former Corporal Alexis Saavedra joined the U.S. Marine Corps in January 2007, and she completed tours in Iraq and Afghanistan in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation Enduring Freedom from 2007 until her retirement in 2011. A single mom, Saavedra is currently using her GI bill to attend California State University Stanislaus and is the first member of her family to attend a four-year university. Saavedra has inspired several of her family members to serve in the military or attend college. For her service, Saavedra was awarded a Letter of Appreciation, Certificate of Appreciation, National Defense Service Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Iraq Campaign Medal with one Service Star, three Sea Service Deployment Ribbons, Marine Corps Good Conduct Medal, Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal, Afghanistan Campaign Medal with one Service Star, NATO Medal – ISAF – Afghanistan, Expert Rifle Badge, and Marksman Pistol Badge. Saavedra’s story is shared as part of Rep. Denham’s #TVT social media initiative to thank veterans for their service. Rep. Denham invites and encourages social media users to post photos and videos using #TVT to recognize America’s military veterans. All #TVT videos can be found on Rep.
