Today, Congressman Denny Heck (WA-10) released the following statement on his decision to support both articles of impeachment against President Donald Trump. This week Americans are busy finishing up their Christmas shopping primarily for their children and if they're lucky enough to have them, for their grandchildren. The high school and college students are taking finals and sweating out the results. This got me to thinking about those who follow. What is our obligation to them? And what about those who came before? What did they see as their obligation to us? People like my grandfather who we think was born on the boat on the way over from Germany. Or my father who fought in WWII against the very people his grandfather had left. We are all here today because someone before us sacrificed so that they could journey here and build a new life in this unique land. And we are here today because those immigrants and their children were dedicated not just to the land of America but the idea freedom and opportunity secured by self-government: choosing our own leaders in free and fair elections. The Rule of Law, with everyone equal under it, anchored in the Constitution. And this idea of America is in peril, put there by a president who would seek to cheat in an election by illegally soliciting foreign assistance. A president who puts himself above the law. A president who attacks the bedrock constitutional precept of checks and balances by obstructing our legitimate inquiry. Can the idea of America handed down to us survive this behavior? What idea of America will we pass on to our kids? Finally, what is our obligation to those who follow?
