Senators Gary Peters (D-MI) and Todd Young (R-IN) introduced the Senate version in June. The legislation seeks to require the Labor Secretary to measure the impact of automation on the workforce by instructing the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine to conduct a study. “At the end of the day, a job is about more than a paycheck,” said Congressman Don Davis. “In North Carolina’s First Congressional District, only about 130,000 workers, or 25 percent of the population, are four-year college graduates. These hard-working eastern North Carolinians are the most vulnerable to shifts in the labor market resulting from automation. In order to preserve their jobs, we must have a more concrete idea of how automation will affect the ratio of human to automated labor, which is why the Workforce DATA Act is an important step forward. In the 21st-century economy, workers are often at the mercy of rapid technological development.
