Doug Collins (R-Ga.) today formally introduced an amendment to the U.S. Constitution to prohibit a change to the number of seats on the U.S. Supreme Court until 10 years after enactment of any legislation to alter the size of the Court. "Democrats' latest threat to pack the Supreme Court throws our nation's history to the wayside in pursuit of political gain and threatens the very foundation of our democracy, said Collins. Since 1869, the Supreme Court has held exactly nine seats. To make a change during such a tumultuous time in our history diminishes the integrity of our nation's highest court and sets an extremely dangerous precedent. By passing a Constitutional Amendment to prohibit any changes to the number of justices until 10 years after any such legislation is signed into law, we can protect our nation's highest court from becoming a political football." This move comes as a number of Democrats have threatened to pack the Supreme Court if the U.S. Senate confirms Judge Amy Coney Barrett to the Supreme Court before the November election. Original cosponsors include Reps. Guy Reschenthaler (R-Pa.), Ken Buck (R-Colo.), Rick Crawford (R-Ark.), Austin Scott (R-Ga.), Rick Allen (R-Ga.), Michael Waltz (R-Fla.), Randy K. Weber (R-Texas), Kevin Hern (R-Okla.), John Rose (R-Tenn.), Bob Gibbs (R-Ohio), and Lloyd Smucker (R-Pa.).
