Rep. Doug Collins (R-Ga.) wrote a letter to the Atlanta VA Health Care System Director Ann R. Brown demanding answers after hearing from several Georgia veterans who have expressed concern for their dental health and wellbeing as a result of the VA's failure to provide eligible veterans with dental care in the midst of the coronavirus pandemic. "Our veterans deserve the highest standard of care we can offer and the VA's exclusion of many dental treatments due to the coronavirus is requiring veterans to seek care elsewhere, Collins wrote. Due to the coronavirus pandemic, the only dental care currently available to eligible veterans is urgent/emergent, a narrow category that excludes many necessary components of dental care. However, dental needs left untreated inevitably turn into emergency dental issues, causing complication and suffering for our veterans. "It is my hope that the VA can reach a positive resolution for our veterans continuing to suffer with dental issues left untreated by the VA, Collins continued. In the letter, Collins requested the VA provide a detailed response explaining what dental services are currently being offered by VA medical facilities and what processes are in place that would allow a veteran to receive dental care outside the VA while maintaining their VA benefits.
