| https://duffy.house.gov/media-center/enewsletters/if-you-were-impacted-by-the-floods-you-need-to-read-this | If you were impacted by the floods, you need to read this | 2016-10-24 | 2016 | 2016-10 | Republican | House | WI | Sean Duffy | D000614 | duffy.house.gov | legacy | Dear friends, This past July, severe storms and massive flooding caused more than $11 million in damage to roads and public infrastructure; in addition to battering local homes and businesses in Ashland, Bayfield, Burnett, Douglas, Florence, Iron, Sawyer, and Washburn counties and the Bad River Band of the Lake Superior Chippewa Tribe, all of which reside in the 7th Congressional District. Amid great loss--we also saw that great, hardworking, kind, Wisconsin spirit on full display. When Senator Ron Johnson and I surveyed the damage, we witnessed families, neighbors, and in some cases perfect strangers, turn out to help with the clean-up. Additionally, our offices received calls from constituents and organizations asking simply, “how can we help?”, and Senator Johnson and I sprang into action as well. We successfully secured federal disaster assistance and set-up a public-private partnership with some of our local, financial institutions. If you live in the impacted areas, I want to make sure you are aware of the options available to you, your family, or your business. First, at the urging of Senator Johnson and myself, the President accepted Gov. Walker’s request for a major disaster declaration for our state. This made available federal disaster relief funding for state, tribal, and eligible local governments and certain private nonprofit organizations for emergency work and the repair or replacement of facilities damaged by the severe storms. I am also happy to report that the U.S. Treasury Secretary heeded our request for additional assistance for some of our farmers, who saw as much as 30 percent of their crop wash away, lost livestock, or suffered property damage. A third option for help is thanks to a partnership with the Federal Home Loan Bank of Chicago --whose membership includes several dozen community banks, credit unions and insurance companies in our state. They are offering $500,000 in assistance for our community. Grants of $5,000 will be available through the FHLBC’s Community First® Disaster Relief Program to eligible households and small businesses located in the areas declared a disaster by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA disaster declaration DR-4276). One can apply for the grant at fhlbc.com or stop in at any participating branch location; the list is also available on their website. This has been an all-hands-on-deck effort to get our community rebuilt and back on track. This serves as a good example of government being there during a time of great need, but just as important, I am humbled by the generosity of our local businesses who jumped at the chance to be there for their neighbors. That Wisconsin spirit is truly unlike any other. I am grateful to represent this place that I love and the people I care about. I look forward to seeing this area of our great state come back better than ever. One more thing before you go... Meet Ben Steinhafel. Ben is a Senior at Marquette University, currently working as an intern in our Washington D.C. office as part of the Les Aspen Center's program. If you have called our D.C. office recently, chances are he was the voice you heard on the other end of the line. This past week Ben showed-off some of what he has learned and took his family on a tour of the U.S. Capitol building. It was great to meet them, and thanks, Ben, for all of your help! If you, or someone you know, are interested in either an internship in one of our offices, or a tour of the Capitol, let us know - we'd love to help! Until next week... | 1 | 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z | 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z |
