Madsen’s drawing “Freckle Face” is a self-portrait highlighting her unique facial features surrounded by blooming roses. Madsen is finishing her senior year at Roncalli High School. Her art teacher is Amy Heinz. The artwork will be on exhibit for the next year in the Cannon Tunnel at the U.S. Capitol, along with the winning artwork from other congressional districts. Second place was awarded to Lilly Young, a senior at Mitchell High School. Her art teacher is Marica Shannon. Young’s black and white photograph “Frozen in Fog” will be displayed in Rep. Johnson’s Washington, D.C. office for the next year. “Congratulations to Eva and Lilly and thank you to all of the students who submitted artwork,” said Johnson. “I’m excited to receive the new artwork and share the talent of South Dakota’s student artists with the rest of the nation. The art competition is a highlight around our offices. We’re always amazed with the quality and skill of our young artists.” The Congressional Art Competition is sponsored by the members of the U.S. House of Representatives. The South Dakota Arts Council partners with Congressman Johnson’s office to carry out this initiative. The Congressional Art Competition began in 1982, providing members of Congress with an opportunity to recognize talent in their home districts. The South Dakota Arts Council, an office of the South Dakota Department of Tourism, is a state agency serving South Dakotans and their communities through the arts with funding from the National Endowment for the Arts and the State of South Dakota.
