https://ebjohnson.house.gov/media-center/press-releases/congress-passes-the-national-defense-authorization-act-for-fiscal-year Congress Passes the National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2020, with Two Congresswoman Johnson Amendments 2019-12-12 2019 2019-12 Democrat House TX Eddie Johnson J000126 ebjohnson.house.gov     legacy WASHINGTON, D.C. Yesterday, The House of Representatives passed the conference report to S.1790, the National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2020, with two amendments by Congresswoman Eddie Bernice Johnson. S.1790 authorizes the funding for a national defense strategy that is built on Democratic principles and advances American values. The two amendments by Congresswoman Johnson included in S.1790 will: Ensure the installation and maintenance of carbon monoxide detectors in all military family housing units. Ensure that cultural competence and diversity are integrated in the recruitment and retention efforts of mental health providers for members of the Armed Forces. Some key Democratic priorities addressed in the National Defense Authorization Act includes: Twelve weeks of paid parental leave for the birth or adoption of a child for all federal civilian employees. This policy is gender-neutral, does not discriminate against the LGBTQ community, and will change the lives of millions of hardworking government employees. A fix to the widow's tax, a long-sought after reform for families of deceased active duty service members. Provisions to promote a more diverse and inclusive military. Requirements for DOD (Department of Defense) to identify, litigate, and plan for the material impacts of climate change on military installations and infrastructures. The National Defense Authorization Act conference report continues to invest in military readiness, said CongresswomanJohnson. It is my hope that the changes made from last year's version, which include my amendments, will meet the needs of our troops and their families. ### 1 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z
