The bill aims to ensure fair and equal representation for U.S. citizens by including a citizenship question on the decennial census and excluding non-citizens from congressional apportionment. Starting with the 2030 census, the bill requires respondents indicate whether they or members of their household are United States citizens. Within 120 days of the census, the Secretary of Commerce must publicly release statistics on citizenship status by state. “Our democracy works best when every citizen’s voice is heard fairly.
