Esty voted “no” on the legislation, which passed the House 235-193. “There’s no doubt in my mind that we need to keep the government open, but the House majority is failing too many Americans to accept a two-week extension right now,” Esty said. “At a time when Connecticut families fear tax increases, the country is attempting to combat an epidemic of opioid addiction, children’s health care is in limbo, and countless other issues must be resolved by the end of the year, we should do better than just keeping the lights on in the building. But that takes a genuine commitment to bipartisanship on both sides. “I know bipartisanship is possible, even in this Congress, as I have successfully authored, passed, and gotten numerous bills enacted into law this year. Democrats were, regrettably, not invited to participate in the budget discussions in any meaningful way. The American people deserve leadership that puts country over party.
