This week, Fedorchak helped pass the Pregnant Students’ Rights Act and the Supporting Pregnant and Parenting Women and Families Act, legislation that offers support to pregnant students and protects federal funding available for pregnancy resource centers. “Unplanned pregnancies can bring fear, uncertainty, and loneliness—which is why being pro-life must always be paired with compassion at all stages. These bills protect pregnant students from being sidelined in school and help states partner with pregnancy resource centers that provide diapers, baby clothes, counseling, and other critical help for families,” Fedorchak added. H.R. 6359, the Pregnant Students’ Rights Act, amends the Higher Education Act to require that all colleges and universities inform students of their rights and protections to carry a pregnancy to term, like modified class schedules, excused absences, and more. It also requires universities to inform students how to file a complaint with the U.S. Department of Education if there is a violation of Title IX protections for pregnant students. H.R. 6945, the Supporting Pregnant and Parenting Women and Families Act, comes after the Biden administration issued a proposed rule that singled out pregnancy resource centers and suggested that state use of Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) funds to support these organizations could be disallowed in the future. This legislation prohibits discrimination against pregnancy resource centers and clarifies that TANF funds may be used for pregnancy centers, allowing states the flexibility to direct resources toward programs that help parents in need.
